Newsletter No.3

Dear American Society Member or Supporter,

Following on the heels of our hugely successful Swig 'n Swine fundraising event, thanks to our generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers (see below), I am pleased to announce several events over the next four weeks, in this our 100th anniversary year:

Speaker Series

We have two interesting talks coming up. On Thursday, May 18th, Sean O’ Neill, Associate Professor at Anthropology at Oklahoma University will give a talk titled: Music in the Americas: On the African and Indigenous Origins of Modern Music and other Sounds. The address for the talk is Av. Niemeyer 2, Sala 203. Then on Thursday, June 8th, Dr. Inez de Mello e Souza, Clinical Psychologist, will speak on a universally relevant topic: Happiness and Well-Being: Achieving meaning and self-realization. This talk will be held at Sociedade Germania in Gávea. For more details please visit our website at americansocietyrio.org or our Facebook page at: facebook.com/amsocietyrio. Both talks begin promptly at 7 pm and are open to the English speaking community. The cost is R$10 for AmSoc members and R$20 for others.

America’s Day

Our annual American-style BBQ event will be held at the American School in Gávea on Saturday, May 20th from 12:30 to 4pm. There’ll be music by DJ Sábia, raffle prizes, and games for adults and children of all ages, including a bean bag toss and trampoline (pula pula). Sponsor Sequoia will once again supply their delicious and healthy Garytos chips and their fantastic tortillas. There’ll be hamburgers and hot dogs, courtesy of our new sponsor Teamwork International Movers, and much more. Soft drinks are courtesy of our sponsor Coca Cola and, for the adults, there’ll be free beer. We’ll have a roof over our heads and the event will happen, rain or shine. Our prices are unchanged from last year: R$30 for members, students and EARJ staff, 6-12 year olds pay R$15, and children under 6 are free! Others pay R$50. Parking is available on campus. Please help us plan the amount of food and drink by sending an RSVP to events.amsoc@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing a great crowd!

Contemporary Art Evening (Now Rescheduled and Restructured)

The art event that was scheduled for May 23rd has now been rescheduled and restructured. With a view to making the event more affordable, we now plan to hold this cocktail, art exhibition and art talk in late July or August, in conjunction with a happy hour, in yet another attractive and convenient location, where participants pay for only for what they wish to consume, and there are no upfront costs.

Pakistani Brunch

Come taste authentic Pakistani cuisine! I’ll be preparing some of my favorite Pakistani brunch delicacies: Khageena, Nihari, Aloo Cholay, Lassi, Kheer Khurma, and Masala Chai. The brunch will be held from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Sunday, June 4th in Flamengo in a condominium party room with a fabulous view. The event is restricted to American Society member and reservations are a must, with payment to be made by May 26th. If we don’t receive 50 paid reservations by the due date, reservations will be opened up to everyone, but at the higher non-member price of R$75. More details on our website and Facebook page.

Past Events

The Happy Hour at the Ginger Mamut Bistro Bar on April 27th was a big success (thanks for organizing Peter Palashevsky), but the top award goes to the Swig ‘n Swine event at the home of the US Consul General and his wife, Jimmy and Susan Story. It was casual, unpretentious and lots of fun, with excellent organization, due mainly to the team of volunteers led by Anna Whyte and Susan Story. It also succeeded in raising funds for for the Arts and Social Transformation charity, thanks to generous donations from sponsors. A big thank you to our sponsors:
